Reading
Reading has the highest priority in our school. We are determined that all children learn to read and develop a love of reading whilst at our school.

Guided Reading
In KS2, children take part in guided reading lessons four times a week. Here is a brief overview of what each lesson involves:
Monday – Vocabulary
Children are introduced to a new text for the week. Teachers highlight challenging vocabulary and explicitly teach these words. Children then complete an activity to deepen their understanding of the new vocabulary.
Tuesday – Prosody
Children practise reading aloud to improve fluency. This includes using strategies such as echo reading, choral reading, paired reading, and text marking to support expressive reading.
Wednesday – Modelling
The teacher models how to answer comprehension-style questions, focusing on one of the following strands: inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval, or summarising.
Thursday – Independent Practice
Children independently complete comprehension questions linked to the strand that was modelled the previous day.

As promised, after collating the results of our Parent reading survey, here is a list of some fantastic websites which will guide you to appropriate reading books for your child’s reading age. Some of you felt that because there are so many books out there it can be very difficult to know what is appropriate for your child. Obviously, the lists are not conclusive but they may help with different genres, authors and difficulty levels.
